Congratulations! Although it wasn’t easy, you made it. You’ve likely realized that weight loss can cause problems in your wardrobe. You may have worn XXXL clothes 6 months ago that don’t fit anymore.

Many guys don’t have the money to spend $1000+ on a new wardrobe. What can a stylish man do? Wear a shirt that is 5x too large for you and declare it a fashion trend.

Slow down, buddy. There are options.

Today’s article will cover everything you need to know to help your man look stylish.

How to Dress a Slim Body

Chances are, before you lost weight, you were one of these two types of man:

  • The triangle (or pear-shaped body) is wider at the hips and narrower at the shoulders.
  • Oval or apple-shaped body: Round torso with large hips and chest.

It’s over. Once you have lost that excess weight, you will be able to achieve the body type you desire. You’ll probably have one or more of these depending on how muscular you are.

  • Inverted triangle body: large shoulders, muscular arms and small waistline.
  • Rectangle body: Your waist is approximately the same width as your shoulders (skinny).
  • The trapezoid body has broad shoulders and chest, with a slim but not skinny waist.

The tricky part is that all these desirable body types are very different from the triangle and oval body shapes.

To look taller and more comfortable, you will need to follow certain rules when dressing up. Although it’s difficult to change these habits, now that you’re a slimmer man, you need to adapt your style to suit your new body.

Now that you have lost weight, baggy shirts or wide-cut jeans will not do you any favors. They will make you appear heavier than you actually are, which is absurd considering all the work you’ve put into losing weight.

How to Dress an Inverted Triangle Body

This is where you aim to balance the upper and lower body parts. You don’t want to be a cartoon character and show off your guns.

It can be difficult to buy clothes off the rack. You may find clothes that fit you well but are too small around your torso. It is possible for every man to benefit from tailoring clothes, but it might be necessary for you.

Close-fitting clothes should emphasize your torso’s sharp, clean lines.

To show off your torso, you can wear slim-fit clothes. But remember to size up. It’s okay to show off your body, but not shout it.

Unstructured jackets are better for streamlining your frame. Structured jackets will bulk up your frame.

You might be tempted by skinny/slim-fit trousers, but straight-leg trousers or jeans are better options. It is not a good idea to wear patterned pants, camo shorts, or checked trousers as it will distract from your relatively large upper body.

How to Dress a Rectangle Body

You should aim to make your rectangular frame appear wider and slimmer by wearing clothing that creates the illusion of wider shoulders and slimmer waist. Weight loss can make your shoulders appear narrower, and this is something you can’t change.

To create the illusion of wider shoulders, you need to have a slim silhouette in the middle of your body.

Layering is a great way to give shape to your upper body (e.g., layer a cardigan under a sport jacket and a dress shirt over a sweater).

Wide collar shirts with wide lapels can create the illusion that you have broader shoulders. Roll-neck sweaters will make your chest appear wider.

You can also create the illusion that your shoulders are wider by wearing jackets or blazers that have shoulder pads.

Color is also an important consideration. Brighter colors and details such as epaulets can increase the size of your slim frame. An easy way to bring out the best in your look is to tie a scarf or drape it.

Darker trousers and jeans will make your legs appear slimmer. This indirectly increases your shoulders’ width. Trouser cuffs can be a great choice, as they give your lower half substance and shape.

How to Dress a Trapezoid Body

If you are lucky enough to be able to possess a trapezoid type body, I envy you!

Although dressing can be simple — most clothes fit well off the rack — your goal is to not become complacent. When necessary, you should still have your clothes tailored.

This common body type can also make you look like everyone else, so it’s a good idea to keep your style distinct.

Vertical stripes can make you look a bit taller. Plaids and checks add horizontal bulk so choose the one that suits your height.

Dark-colored trousers can be worn with lighter-colored shirts. Your legs will look more proportionate to your upper body if you do this. Trapezoid frames, like the inverted triangle body look unbalanced if your legs aren’t straight.

A good personal style and clean lines are all that is required for an average build to look great. Pocket squares are a great way to stand out from the crowd.
