Trends are always changing and 2023 will be a year of new trends in makeup. The Euphoria effect fades, contour is not currently in our vocabulary, it’s a new start… that may just be a little familiar. Take ’90s makeup. In 2023, «We are going to steal that new skin, but not to tweeze away our brows in the process,» says Tasha Reiko-Brow, a makeup artist who collaborates with Whitney Peak, Alicia Keys and Gabrielle Union. We elevate any trend we see before. It’s never the same as before.
Although it will be easy, this new moment in makeup is not effortless. Melissa Hernandez, a makeup artist who works with Lili Reinhart and Sydney Sweeney, says that there will be a big transition from perfected and polished makeup to natural skin and real eyes. Makeup formulations in 2023 will be lighter, but still as effective. Shiny shimmers will shine brighter, without the extra sparkle of glitter. Black liner and mascara will still be great, but they get super-inky.
This is the perfect time to embrace your skin, your features, and your face. Let’s get started…
Let your skin take a deep breath. «For a moment we were stuck in coverage, coverage and coverage. Brown says it was just for the sake coverage. «Faces should be visible.» Base makeup formulas will move away from heavy textures. Mary Phillips, makeup artist for Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, says that she expects to see «fresh-faced makeup.» People are switching to tinted foundations and tinted moisturizers in favor of tinted primers and tinted sunscreens.
Supergoop!, Ilia and Saie are all brands. There are featherlight formulas that can be used as a foundation, which is basically no-makeup makeup in one bottle. Brown says, «We are seeing foundation that looks very skin-like. It’s not sitting on top.» The new Westman Atelier skin care products are already a huge hit with Allure editors. Dianna Mazzone associate features director, says that the finish and feel aren’t foundation-y. «The formula is easy to blend and sinks into skin, while the luminosity lasts throughout the day.»
In the next 12 months, eyebrows will be at their peak. On the spring 2023 runways, models wore eclectic arches with stylized slits from Poster Girl, Vivienne Westwood’s pencil-thin arches, geometric, metallic triangles by Thom Browne, and brows bleached at Givenchy and Roberto Cavalli. Hernandez predicts that even thin, highly-plucked eyebrows will return. (We don’t approve, but we are here to bring you the latest.
Celebrities have been applying peroxide to their eyebrows since the last catwalk. Brown says, «With the bare faces we’re moving towards it doesn’t seem overwhelming.» It’s perfect, I think. Bella Hadid and Julia Fox agree that bleaching the brows is a good idea. This look is becoming more common and less shocking. You don’t have to go platinum if you don’t want it.
Full-on bedazzled eyebrows can be a great way to make a big impression at the end. Models’ brows were embellished in glitter colors such as red and silver at Peter Do’s show.
Messy makeup is making a strong comeback with the return of smudged and lived-in eyes. Imagine Kate Moss or Courtney Love in the 1990s. Sir John, CTZN Cosmetics chief artistic officer and Beyonce’s makeup artists, suggests smudging your liner with a brush to achieve a more natural look. Imperfection is the key and precision is irrelevant. Hernandez says, «Everyone is like we want to be grunge- and strange.» «All the makeup at spring shows was very real.»
Sergio Hudson’s models were able to rock the classic smokey eye with smudged black shadows. Fendi’s spring 2023 collection modernized the look by adding a bold swipe of silver to the lash line.
Your base makeup (or lack thereof) can balance all of this edginess. Brown says that the ’90s looked very much like a CK One ad. It was pure beauty. That is where I believe we got this return to healthy skin.
Satin, glossy, shiny. There have been moments of light in the matte lips of recent years, but the reflections will soon become blinding. The red, glossy lips of Miu Miu and Moschino looked so rich. Alex Babsky, a makeup artist who works alongside Florence Pugh, and Lashana Lynch, says that she will be seeking out opportunities to create a shinier, fresher lip in the future.
Hernandez is referring to a new level of gleam that we have never seen before. «It’s almost like latex,» explains Hernandez. The days of a heavily lined lips layered with transparent gloss and shimmery lipsticks are gone. Hernandez says that we will see more lip color in our faces — bold, opaque reds, purples and oranges as well as browns and grays. It will shine bright.
Although mascara is not a revolutionary way to apply makeup, it can make a big difference. Faux lashes can be achieved with the latest formulas, such as Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara Mascara, Christian Louboutin Beauty Les Yeux Noirs lift Ultima, and Tower 28 MakeWaves Mascara Mascara Mascara. You can apply them liberally. Brown says she uses at least three coats of mascara and is using double-dose mascara on top and bottom. Curl lashes first to get the best effect.
Color block shadow in a rainbow neon. A splash of hot pink blush, layered just right on the cheeks and eyes to create electric orange eyes. Viva Magenta has been declared the color of year. The «dopamine glam», bright bursts with color, will continue to be a trend. It was on display at Etro’s spring event (with shocking pink blush and ombre skin and lemon-yellow lips), at Dsquared, Alice and Olivia, and at Dsquared, with two-toned lipsticks, as well as at Alice and Olivia, where the eyes were highlighted by shocking pink pigment on their lids. Sir John says, «Creating a mosaic and emphasizing your most loved features will never go out fashion.» There’s no wrong way. The more vibrant the palette, the better. Babsky says that eye makeup is now a more vibrant aspect of makeup and she doesn’t expect this to change anytime soon.
It’s so iridescent, it’s almost angelic. This is the look we want in 2023. Alturzarra, Proenza Schuuler, and Victoria Beckham demonstrated that skin can look almost mirror-like when used strategically and with the right highlighter. Sheika Daley, makeup artist, says that it’s almost like no-makeup makeup but with a summer glow. Cosmetic chemists can help by bringing skin care products that are lightweight and translucent to the market. Brown says that «bronzers will take a step back.» This is the right time to use a highlighter with high-wattage and holographic shimmer. It’s impossible to shine brighter.
