There are many ways to describe beauty products. Good, great, amazing, and perfect are all possible. But the most prestigious honor, aside from being named Allure Best of Beauty winner, is when a product has been deemed a cult favorite. This is not an award that’s bestowed upon many beauty products. It’s reserved for the very few that are popular year after year. They are the antithesis to the viral trend category that dominates our screens more and more.
Many of these fan favorite products will be reformulated or even discontinued due to the constantly changing beauty industry and the constant innovation. This is disappointing for many. The product that was formerly called Kat Von D Beauty Everlasting Lipstick in the dusty, rosy mauve shade Lolita is currently being discontinued. The brand’s new Hyperlight Liquid Lipstick has replaced the entire Everlasting lipstick range.
Let’s go back a moment: Kat Von D Beauty was renamed KVD Beauty in 2020 when Kat Von D’s founder decided to concentrate on other projects. Kendo now owns the brand. The parent company stated that the Kat Von D products would not be altered at the time of the transition. This is the first time a brand-classic product has been reformulated by Kat Von D in more than two years.
KVD Beauty released an August press release stating that the new formula is still fluid, matte, and long-lasting. According to the brand, the new lipsticks will offer more comfort and a lighter feel while still being transfer-proof and lasting.
It is important to clarify that the shade previously known as Lolita remains in the collection, but it now goes by Queen of Poisons. The 21 existing shades are not all new: 12 of the 21 are brand new colors, and nine are reformulated versions of older ones. The nine new reformulations are called Torch Ginger (nee A–Go-Go), and Moon Flower (nee Lolita I). However, Bow n Arrow, Ludwig and other fan favorites did not make the cut into this new line.
The brand provides a color match chart on their website for the reformulated colors. The brand stated that they had a lot of fun creating shades similar to the original Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. «We will also be launching new shades over the next few months to ensure that everyone can find the perfect shade of Everlasting Hyperlight Liquid Lipstick.»
Reddit’s long-time fans were skeptical about the brand’s assurances. This is what often happens when repackaging classic products. Although most people supported the removal of the problematic name Lolita they wanted to keep the formula and the color they loved so dear.
I have never tried the Lolita lipstick, nor any of the other shades from the original Everlasting range. I don’t know what the fuss is about. I asked a few of my former Lolita devotees to help me understand. They were all willing to test the Queen of Poisons shade, and then compare it with its predecessor.
Despite their affection for the mauvy color, girls all agree that the original formula was extremely dry. Although it wasn’t significantly drier than matte liquid lipsticks available at the time, we have (thankfully!) evolved and now want better for our lips. It sounded good that the brand promised that the new formula would be gentler on our lips.
A matte lipstick should be rich in pigment and last for a long time without drying out your lips. The Everlasting Hyperlight Liquid Lipstick seems to be living up to its claims. Trakoshis was able to take one swipe and travel back to middle school when the lipstick was in fashion («you weren’t a cool kid if you didn’t have it”). This new version is really comfortable. Trakoshis shared that the older version would have left my lips dry and cracked. It feels so clean now, it’s almost like nothing is there.
McGrath agrees that the new formula feels better on the lips. She noticed that it felt more comfortable the longer she wore the lipstick. McGrath says that the lipstick takes time to get used to and becomes one with the lips. The lipstick was tested against a 90-degree walk followed by buffalo chicken wrap. The dark mauvy pigment survived. The shade may be darker than the original, but it doesn’t matter.
Dall’Asen loved the new formula so much that she might have returned to KVD lipsticks. She says, «It’s much easier to spread and it dries down to something a bit more velvety and less flaky. (I used to have to clean Lolita off completely before I reapplied back in the day, because it lasted for a long time but didn’t layer well).»
How did I feel? It’s not my favorite color but I decided to keep it. It was a risky experiment that I made. I didn’t use any lip balm while I was testing it. I like to moisten my lips before I apply matte-liquid lipsticks. My lips weren’t as dry after the water had dried, so it wasn’t too bad. My lips felt great the second I applied the liquid formula.
The formula has a good color payoff and it can be used without worrying about clumpiness. The mauvey color looks lighter on my lips, than in the tube. The ridged packaging is not what I am feeling, and that’s not just me. «I have to grieve the original packaging, as I was a sucker of the hand-drawn tattoo motif. Dall’Asen admits that while I’m not a fan of the new ridged tube design, the updated doe feet are something to be noted. The applicator is smaller and narrower than her original, which she claims makes it easier to control the amount and placement. The doe foot is also a favorite of mine. It can be used to line my lips when I run out of lipliner.
According to Ginger King, a cosmetic chemist, dimethicone is the key ingredient that has changed everything. She shares that dimethicone gives skin, hair, and lips a silky smooth feeling. It is one of the most important ingredients that gives products an instant luxurious feel.
The Redditors are not to be afraid, according to our assessment. KVD’s Everlasting Hyperlight Liquid Lipstick has been redesigned and is currently receiving 10s from all over the world. Particularly, the Queen of Poisons shade stayed true to its predecessor’s mauvy hue, while providing much-needed relief for our lips.
