In the past decade, the classic French manicure has been reimagined with neon colors, negative space and holographic finishes. The most captivating TikTok creation this year was the double ombre French manicure. This nail art combines the French tip and ombre gradients to create a look that is reminiscent of magic shows. Rita Remark is an editorial manicurist and global Essie lead educator. «It’s completely surreal and unique.»
It looks best on long nails, such as those with square, stiletto or almond nails. However, it is possible to enjoy this trend even if you have shorter nails. Learn more about double ombre French and check out our favourite examples.
Double ombre French nails are a combination of two trends, the French manicure (which usually features a nude or rose base and off-white tips), and gradient designs.
Emily H. Rudman is a nail artist and founder Emilie Heathe nail care brand. She points out that the ombre art can be painted vertically on the tip and base. Dayanna I Sapien, a nail artist, echoes these sentiments. She says that the base’s gradient should be the opposite of that at the tip. The base should have a dark-to-light gradient. The tip should be dark to dark.
Sonya Belakhlef, nail artist, says that «this nail art tricks your eye because it’s not the expectation of your brain.» It makes you stop and consider the direction of the gradient.
Sapien says, «It quickly became a top hashtag on TikTok.» We’ve seen the comic book nails and glazed donuts of the past that manicure trends can fly off the app at breakneck speed.
Over 14.8M people have viewed the hashtag «ombrefrenchnails». Mabelyn Martin is the creative director at NYC nail salon Paintbox. She believes that the manicure is very popular due to its freshness and eye-catching nature. Martin states that the manicure’s optical illusion is unique and intriguing, particularly for long nails. It’s transformed a traditional design into something almost three-dimensional.
Although the design might seem complicated, experts claim it is easy to make at home. An Cao, a nail artist, says that you can create this design with practice and the right tools.
Step 1: Prepare your nails. You can file them in the shape you prefer and then push your cuticle back. Apply a base coat.
Step 2: Paint one side your nail. Apply the first color in your gradient. You don’t have to worry about the polish extending beyond your fingers.
Step 3: Paint the opposite side of your nail. Apply the second color in your gradient. Make sure the colors meet in the middle.
Step 4: Blur. Use a sponge or brush to create an ombre effect.
Step 5: Dry your nails completely. This could take anywhere from five to ten minutes.
Step 6: Prepare to create the second gradient. Place a hole reinforcement, you know, the one you used to ensure your hole-punched notes didn’t rip from your binder.
Step 7: Continue repeating steps 2 through 4 along your tip. Your gradients should not be in opposition to each other. If the base of your nail has a dark-to-light gradient, the tip should have a lighter to darker one.
Step 8: Apply your topcoat.
Brittney Ellen, a nail artist created this vibrant orange and white double French French ombre manicure that is reminiscent of a creamsicle. It’s as delicious as a dessert on a hot summer afternoon.
Elizabeth M, a nail artist, shows that the look doesn’t have to be limited to long nails. This manicure is both striking yet practical enough to be worn every day.
Kirsten Chanel’s manicure is especially captivating. This manicure by Kirsten Chanel is a combination of purple shades that creates an appearance so 3D it almost jumps off our screens.
Chanel is also responsible for this creamy neutral look that isolates the illusion from the double ombre at each nail’s tips.
You can create double ombre nails with press-ons if you’re not ready. Parvee Perry, a nail artist who works with press-ons, created this amazing double ombre look using pastel polish and a stripe to add dimension.
