The Galaxy S23 will be a big phone, but we are confident that Samsung can make it work with its new flagship phones.

The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus felt more iterative than ingenious among this year’s releases — but the Galaxy S22 Ultra was a different story, bringing back the Galaxy Note.

The rumors about the Galaxy S23 are only beginning to surface. We wanted to share our thoughts and what we think. Here’s what we know so far about the Galaxy S23, and our wishlist.

We expect the Galaxy S23 to launch in February like the Galaxy S22. The Galaxy S21 series was released in January 2021. However, Samsung needed to make space for the Galaxy S21 FE so the S22’s launch was likely delayed. The Galaxy S22 FE is not likely to be in production at Samsung so it may not have an impact on the S23 rollout plans.

A battery for a Galaxy S23 Plus phone was certified by a South Korean agency in September. This is evidence that a launch in February 2023 is possible. This timing is consistent with the S22 rollout and would suggest that a February 2023 launch could be possible.

We have just heard that Samsung could be targeting a mid-January release of the S23. Sources claim that this would prevent users from switching to non-Samsung smartphones immediately after the new year.

The Galaxy S23 is expected to make its debut in early 2023. We expect Samsung to stick to their established release schedules for phones. However, recent delays due to the coronavirus pandemic or chip shortages have resulted in some phone launches being delayed.

Samsung Galaxy S23 design

The Galaxy S23’s may follow the Galaxy S22’s design. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, in particular, looks very similar to its predecessor. According to Ice Universe, the smartphone will measure 6.43×3.07x 0.35inches. This is a slight increase from the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 6.42×3.06x 0.35inches. This is despite a tip from Ice Universe that a new camera could be tipped. This could lead to a bigger camera module, and therefore a thicker phone overall.

Ice Universe looked into the rumor and concluded that Samsung may be increasing the thickness of the Galaxy S23’s bezel. The reason the bezel thickness could increase is still unknown. This could be an attempt to improve durability. We will keep our eyes on this as we get closer to launch.

Are you curious about what these rumors could mean for the S23 Ultra’s design? The Galaxy S23 Ultra renders, which were leaked, show the potential design of the new flagship. The renders show a black phone with a striking resemblance the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but Ice Universe has suggested that there may be differences between the renders and the final product.

According to another leak by Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Series will be very similar to the S22 series. From the dimensions of the phones to their screen sizes, they are almost identical to their predecessors. The Galaxy S23 will be sporting a 6.1-inch 1080×2340 screen, while the Galaxy S23 Plus will have a 6.6 inch 1080×2340 LCD and the Galaxy S23 Plus will have a 6.6-inch 1080×2340 LCD. The S23 Ultra will sport a 6.8-inch 1400×3088 display. This is the exact same display as the Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra. The Ultra’s weight could be altered by the addition of metal parts.

Ice Universe identified the display as the only thing that would be upgraded on Galaxy S23 Ultra in comparison to the S22 Ultra. We don’t know how, but he did say that it would be something minor, like brightness or power efficiency, and not a higher refresh rate or resolution.

The front of the phone may not change but the Galaxy S23 Plus and S23 Plus might look different when you flip it over. New renders based on leaks from OnLeaks show the phones with individually-embedded camera sensors, which mirrors the look of the S22 Ultra. The renders are supported by leaked cases for all three Galaxy S23 models.

We’ll probably have at least four color options. These will include beige, black and light pink. They will be available on all three S23 models.

Samsung Galaxy S23 cameras

Many rumors claim that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will have a 200MP camera. This would be an impressive increase on the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 108MP camera.

The camera rumor gained momentum in recent times. However, another leak suggests that it may not be the second generation ISOCELL HP3 sensor Samsung uses, but rather the older ISOCELL HP1.

A new tip suggests that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will get a 200MP camera from Samsung. This sensor was later identified as the ISOCELL HP2, and it will outperform both the HP1 200MP sensors and the HP3 200MP sensors.

This could be good news to the next Samsung flagship phone. The Samsung HP3 sensor is a mid-range one, while the HP1 sensor is larger and more refined and will be available on the Motorola X30 Pro and the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. Samsung may have another sensor in mind for its flagship to compete with the rest.

Samsung has posted a video showing the 200MP HP1 camera sensor at work. The sensor was used to take a picture of a cat, then enlarged the image to fit onto a canvas measuring 28 x 22 meters that was attached to a building. Although it’s difficult to know for certain in a YouTube video, the image was impressive. The details are crisp and clear, with each cat hair clearly identified.

Even the most powerful phones’ cameras can have trouble with this because they are less capable of capturing more detail. Samsung’s video clearly suggests that a 200MP main lens could unlock more from its Galaxy phone photography.

Another leak revealed more information about the 200MP camera in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. It also suggested that the phone could compete with the iPhone 14 Pro. Ice Universe tweeted that it was «100% confirmed that the phone would get a 200MP camera that has 0.6mm-sized pixels and a larger aperture of F/1.7 to capture more light. Although this is a small increase in the size of the camera sensor from the S22 Ultra, it’s still smaller than the 48MP sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro.

Ice Universe claims that the camera can take photos at 12.5MP, 200MP resolution and 50MP. This resolution is already available on other phones with the 200MP sensor so it is strange that Samsung has not enabled this feature for its phone. IU stated that the S23 Ultra’s main 200MP camera may be better at low-light photography than was expected.

GalaxyClub claims that both the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will have a 12MP front-facing camera. This would be the first time that either model has received a higher resolution selfie camera since the launch the Samsung Galaxy S10 in 2019.

It is not known what upgrades may be included or if the rumor is true. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 40MP front-facing camera. It’s high time Samsung gave some more shooting power to its two lower-priced models.

The telephoto and ultrawide camera will not be changed. GalaxyClub sources tell us that the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will use the same 10MP telephoto camera as the S22 and S22 Plus and that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will keep its 10MP optical zoom camera (10x) too. While this doesn’t rule out other changes to the zoom cameras, it is likely that there will be no significant change if the resolution sensor remains the same.

GalaxyClub claims that the S23 Ultra and S23 Plus will continue to have 12MP sensors. We don’t know anything about the S23 Ultra’s ultrawide-angle camera, but we expect it to stay the same.

Samsung Galaxy S23 chipset & performance

We have only heard contradictory rumors so far about the Galaxy S23’s chipset. Initial reports claimed that Samsung would use a MediaTek chipset in some Galaxy S23 units. However, this has since been discredited. It was then clear that Samsung would stop production of its Exynos chips to make room for a new Galaxy-only chipset. Qualcomm confirmed it would only supply Snapdragon silicon to the Galaxy S23 line-up over the summer, according to reports.

After including the Exynos system-on-chip in several Galaxy S models, it is understandable why Samsung would want to explore ways to improve its Exynos chipset. Samsung flagships with the Exynos system on chip lag behind Snapdragon-powered models, as was the case during our Galaxy S22 benchmark test.

Ice Universe leaks that the Galaxy S23 is being considered by Qualcomm. This could be a sign of Exynos’ return, as the Exynos 2300 is still used in certain models.

Despite this, we have seen benchmarks for the Samsung Galaxy S23, which show some impressive performance. Although we don’t know what model these benchmarks are referring to, it seems like it could be the standard Galaxy S23.

Other rumors

The Samsung S23 Ultra will get the same battery (from multiple sources) as the S22 Ultra and the S21 Ultra, which are both a 5,000 mAh battery. One thing that could save the phone is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. This chip could provide power management and help with battery life.

The Galaxy S23 base variant is expected to see a slight increase in battery capacity. According to one report, the Galaxy S23 could see a 5% increase in battery capacity compared with the Galaxy S22. The S23 Plus could also see an increase of up to 4,700mAh, which is an improvement on the S22 Plus’s 4,500 mAh battery.

According to Ice Universe, the Galaxy S23 might have the same 25W charging speed of the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S23 Plus or S23 Ultra may have the same 45W charging speeds as their predecessors. Samsung seems to be keeping charging in place as a way to distinguish between the base model, and the more expensive versions.

We have heard that Samsung may refer to the Galaxy S23 internally under «Project Diamond». Previously, it was believed that this codename referred to a third folding device, but Ross Young, DSCC analyst, has confirmed that this is not the case.
