Razer Edge hub, the latest device to join the growing cloud gaming handheld market, is now available. This machine was announced at RazerCon 2022. It is described as the «world’s first 5G mobile gaming device,» according to George Koroneos (a Verizon PR manager who worked with Razer on the Edge 5G).
The Qualcomm Snapdragon G3X Generation 1 Gaming Platform chipset is used to power this handheld. It can tap into both fast 5G mmWave and Verizon’s CBand 5G networks. The Qualcomm 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform allows it to intelligently switch between different networks.
The Razer Edge appears to be inspired by the Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x gaming gadget that was revealed last year. The Razer-exclusive kit that included the Qualcomm device was created in collaboration with Razer for software developers to build on the Snapdragon gaming platform.
Razer Edge has a 6.9 inch (2400 x 1080) AMOLED display with a 144hz refresh speed. This handheld has the Snapdragon G3x chip and a 3GHz Kryo CPU (8 cores) and Adreno GPU. The Razer Kishi V2 Pro is included with it, which includes a 5000mAh lithium battery.
We have a lot to say about the Razer Edge.
Razer Edge is available for pre-orders on its official website. The handheld can be reserved for $5 but you will need a Razer ID to do so. You’ll receive instructions via email on how to complete your order after that.
The Wi-Fi version is currently not available for pre-order. It costs $399. A $499 Founder’s edition is available that comes with a pair Razer Hammerhead True Wireless earbuds. The price of the 5G version has not been disclosed by the company.
The Razer Edge will arrive in January 2023.
We stated in our initial coverage that the Razer Edge will be capable of running the most demanding Android apps, even though it is marketed as a cloud gaming device. This means that you can play Xbox Game Pass titles via the Xbox Cloud Gaming service. You can also play titles from Nvidia’s GeForce Now on the Razer Edge.
This handheld is 5G-connected, which gives it an edge over the Logitech Gaming handheld that lacks this feature. You may be wondering why you would need a 5G gaming device if you already have a top 5G phone and an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. The Razer Edge is solely designed for gaming and should therefore be optimized.
However, for $400, a gaming device that streams games and can not play them locally may prove difficult to sell. The entry-level Steam Deck is available for $299, as well as the standard Nintendo Switch OLED for $349.
For myself, I won’t be able to comment on the Razer Edge until after I have tested it myself in January 2023. It’s not a superior alternative to my Steam Deck, at least for now. However, I will be glad to be proved wrong by the Razer Edge.
