The austere palette of 1990s fashion is stronger than ever, but the runways for spring/summer 2023 were still full of color. Designers from Paris to New York infused their collections in a new array of colors and tones. While neutrals like gray, cream, black and grey are still available, some exciting (and surprising!) new shades are making their way into our hearts and carts.
Every new style that comes into our wardrobes has an accompanying set of older pieces that we have to get rid of in order to make room for the new ones. This is especially true when it comes to colors. My neutral-focused editor is just as fussy about wearing other colors than black. As I looked at the 2023 fashion trends, I selected five shades that I could see myself using. These are replacing some colors that I haven’t bought in the past and won’t be buying new versions of. Look no further for the ultimate 2023 color download.
The runways were dominated by icy pastels, rather than a single color. The shades of light pink, lavender, mint, and periwinkle looked diluted and superficial, especially when you consider that many of the looks featured were made of sheer, flowy fabrics, such as this Jil Sander ballet slipper-hued gown. This trend is something I am keen to try, because it goes well with my more classic neutrals. I’m not a fan of bright neons with the influx of pastels. They were always difficult to style, anyway.

Metallics were once considered a «tacky finish», but they are now back in style. It’s all about adding a metallic piece to any outfit, from silver slingbacks to patent handbags. Although I may have tempted to reach for bright orange shoes or bags in order to make an impression, silver is now my go-to bold color.

This statement may be misunderstood by some, but I’m not a fan of super-saturated colours. Personally, I will be skipping the bright pinks and opting for the soft ballet pinks I saw throughout the S/S 23 collection. I was a fan of the 16Arlington satin pieces and will continue to love them with satin clothes and sweet accessories.

Although I love beige, and I have plenty of it in my wardrobe, I am now seeing a shift towards cool-toned grey as the new It neutral. Sandy Liang and Prada created a monochromatic effect with tailored pieces. I can’t wait to see the results. Gray is the best color for basics this year.
Gray shades available:
The saturated green shade has been the dominant color for accessories and clothing for many years. But, I can now confidently state that there is a bold new It color. Shades of cerulean, turquoise, or aqua are rapidly gaining popularity. As we have already seen, the electric blue was on the fall 2022 runways. But spring 2023 will be the time it really shines. To add bright pops to my outfits, I will be using the oceanic hue.
