Here’s how to get rid of the ‘work’ mindset at the end, whether you are back at work or working remotely.

Although the lines between home and work may not be as blurred now as during the pandemic, it can still be difficult to switch off from «work mode» at the end of a long working day.

If you are the type of person who constantly checks your email on the train to work or runs the day’s events through your head as you get ready to go to bed, then you will know what we mean. Even if you don’t intend to, it can be difficult to unplug from the world of work at 5:30pm.

We all know how important it is to have a work/life balance for our mental health, especially when it comes down to avoiding burnout. Continue reading to see our comprehensive guide on what you can do to make that mental transition.

1. TIE UP

If you are WFH and your workspace has been used for other purposes, be sure to clean up your work area at the end. If you just returned from work, store your work bag upstairs, or in a cabinet.

It’s been said that ‘out of sight is out of mind’. Not only will tidying make it easier to keep your workday separated from your evening, but also makes it harder to check in later.

2. SCREEN IT ALL

To get rid of work-related worries that can dominate your evening, you can do a «brain dump» activity. You don’t have to do anything fancy. Simply grab some paper and start writing down what you need to remember the next morning.

You’ll be less likely to waste the evening worrying about what you should do next day.

3. MOVEMENT OF THE BODY

It’s a great way for you to get your mind off work and release any stress. You don’t have to do a hard workout after work. However, you can still unwind by doing something more relaxing like mobility work or yoga.

Plan out what you will do before you go to work. You could even plan your clothes and equipment.

4. WALK

Walking for some distance can help you disconnect from the work environment and give you a sense of a commute.

It’s a great idea to take a break from the daily grind and walk to the station after work. To reduce stress and distract from the daily events, you could try mindfulness walking.

5. COOK DINNER

Although it may seem like an easy task, cooking dinner can have a profound impact on your mind.

It is great because you are not only mentally engaged, but also physically. You won’t be back on your computer or checking emails while you have vegetables to chop.

6. BATH

There is a better way to get rid of the work day than to take a hot, steaming bath with your favorite bath products.

If you work remotely and prefer to plan ahead, you can even set the timer for half an hour to run the bath. Then you will be able to jump in immediately after you close your laptop.

7. TALK TO A FRIEND

Setting a non-negotiable appointment is one of the best ways you can ensure that you are able to switch off work on time. It is also a great way for friends to schedule in their time.

Chatting with someone is a great way to reduce stress and distract from any worries. It’s also perfect for right after the end of your day rush.

8. GET CRAFTY

Like cooking, a craft is a great way for you to relax and keep your mind busy after work. There are many craft options for adults, including embroidery and painting.

9. LISTEN TO A PODCAST

Instead of obsessing over the things you haven’t done, you can plug into your favorite podcast and let the conversation distract.

This one is great regardless of whether you work from home or commute. Listening to another person helps you get the ‘me time’ you need after a long day.

10. DO A PUZZLE

Although it may sound absurd, there is something about solving a jigsaw puzzle that helps you focus on the puzzle and not worry about the next day.

You will find something you enjoy after work that will keep you engaged and motivated.

11. SKINCARE

No matter if you have been wearing makeup, washing your face after work is a great way of removing stress and metaphorically cleansing your skin.

It’s a great way for self-care and to wind down at night.

12. GIVE YOURSELF A FACIAL MASSAGE

It doesn’t take a genius to see that facial muscles can be tightened up. A quick facial massage is a great way for relaxation and to release tension.

You will need a facial oil, moisturiser, or cleanser to start. After that, you can refer to our facial massage guide.

13. CHANGE CLOTHES

It doesn’t matter if you are wearing office clothes or loungewear for work, switching to a different outfit in the evening can help you mark the transition from work to relax.

You may feel more relaxed if you slip into something cozier, such as PJs.
