The founder of Rhode skincare posted a TikTok showing the model wearing «brownie glaze lips», a combination of clear lipgloss and a brown lipliner. This is a technique black and brown women have used for decades.
If you’re like me, and have spent a lot of time on TikTok in the last year, then you are probably familiar with the «glazed donut» aesthetic that has overtaken the beauty industry and was popularised by Hailey Bieber.
Bieber’s ‘glazed donuts’ are a great example of the beauty trends she has been promoting on Instagram. They range from minimalist browns to iridescent shimmering nudes, and her ‘glazed Donut’ skincare routine which leaves her glowing with dewy, glowy light.
The Rhode skincare founder shared another TikTok about the same scenario, describing how she was «ready for all things fall», with «brownie-glazed lips» as well.
The clip has been viewed over 2.9 million times. Bieber is seen sporting the glossy lip look that has made everyone talk.
You may be wondering what brownie glazed lips are. It is a dark brown lip liner with clear ligloss. You did read it correctly.
This simple lip has been a tradition for black and brown women since the 90s. It’s been called the «brownie glaze lips», and is now taking TikTok by surprise. Many TikTok users have started sharing the look and crediting Bieber. This is something I am not surprised at as a woman of color.
I have known black women who have sported this lip look for years (myself included), but it is easy for white women to adopt it and make it appealing for mainstream consumers. This is a common problem with trends for brown and black women. This is an issue many have taken to social networking to address. A white female celebrity has been credited with a trend that black women have been practicing for decades.
In a TikTok caption, #BrownGirlMakeup creator @makeupbymonicaa said that another ‘trend’ was being taken from her as she used a similar lip color. She wrote, «Which POC had been doing for many years,» at the top of the video.
One user tweeted, «Hailey has brownie-glazed lips and it is literally just brown liner + glossy that Black and Latina women do for years,»
The ‘chola’ subculture, second-generation Mexican American communities in Los Angeles, popularised the lip look. They wore it with sharp, thin eyebrows and cat eyeliner.
This trend was heavily influenced worldwide by Black women who wore it. It can be seen on many celebrities, such as Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child and Halle Berry.
The use of clear gloss and brown lip-liner allowed us to create the perfect nude lips at a time when makeup for black and brown women was not widely available. This was once again a testament to our creativity and ability create something for ourselves in a time when there wasn’t a lot of color options for olive or brown skin.
Although some might argue it is «just a make up trend», the renaming of this look as «the brownie-glazed lips» suggests that it is not. It is now synonymous with Bieber’s brand, and therefore, has a different origin from the WOC.
This was also the case with TikTok’s ‘clean girl’ aesthetic. The trend is a modernized version of the 90s and early 2000s ‘off duty model’ look, with gold hoop earrings and minimal make-up. However, many believe the aesthetic is heavily inspired by Latinx women and Black women.
«Clean girl aesthetic» is a term that white women are co-opting. Black and brown women were vilified and called «ghetto» until they wanted to be fashionable on the clock app . Another user commented: «Seeing Hailey Bieber [credited] with the ‘clean girls aesthetic’ and the ‘brownie glazed lips’ is so exhausting. Like Black and Brown women BEEN THE BOBLUEPRINT, once a rich yt woman does something, it’s balls off of the walls.»
Trends come back around. This 90s-inspired lip style is an example. It’s not the reemergence of the trend or women using it, but when publications and people make it appear that one person created a new trend when it’s been around for years. This is often a problem for marginalised groups who are often subject to negative criticism for creating the trend.
Hailey Bieber’s influence and impact on the beauty industry are undeniable. This will not end after all the controversy around this trend. It is important to remember that we can save ourselves from having these conversations by referring to the origin of these trends.
It is really that easy.
